History of CerMark LMM-6000
CerMark LMM-6000 is a black laser marking coating originally developed by TherMark (now part of Ferro/Vibrantz) for creating permanent, high-contrast marks on bare metal surfaces. Its development responded to growing demands in industrial laser marking for durable, readable, and versatile identification—whether for traceability, quality control, or decorative purposes.
Origins and Product Evolution
TherMark Legacy: LMM-6000 was one of Thermark’s two general-purpose laser marking inks, especially formulated for stainless steel and harder metals. It dried into a hard, handleable coating, allowing pre-marking storage or handling of parts.
Versatile Substrate Support: Tests showed compatibility with a wide range of metals—stainless steel (including bright annealed), galvanized steel, aluminum, brass, copper, chrome plating, nickel, gold, silver, titanium, and pewter.
Application Techniques: LMM-6000 can be applied via aerosol spray, paste, airbrush, or HVLP industrial systems. For pastes, thinning (1:1 by volume with ethanol or similar solvents) ensures even coverage.
Laser Compatibility & Mark Quality: Marking is typically performed using CO₂, YAG, or fiber lasers—CO₂ lasers around 35 W are common, with close to 100% power and 4–8 in/s speeds on stainless, and slower speeds on softer, heat-conductive metals like aluminum.
Permanence and Durability: The marks are known to be highly durable —resistant to acids, bases, solvents, extreme temperatures, scraping, salt spray, and UV exposure
Cleaning and Reuse: Excess coating washes off easily with plain water. However, once the paste dries or is used, it cannot be reused or rerun effectively
Transition to Ultra & Product Discontinuation
CerMark Ultra: Ferro introduced CerMark Ultra as a newer, multi-substrate alternative offering faster drying, darker results, and broader compatibility across metals, glass, ceramics, and more. It was formulated to replace multiple older formulas (including LMM-6000), with improved performance and cost efficiency.
